Man and the Sea
by Baudelaire
Free man, you will for ever love the sea!
The sea's your mirror; you observe your soul
Perpetually as its waves unroll,
Your spirit's chasm yawns as bitterly.
You like to plunge into your element,
Embrace it with your eyes and arms. Your soul
At times forgets its clamour sorrowful
In this ungovernable wild lament.
You are both of you dark and reticent;
Man, none has sounded your profound abyss,
O sea, none knows your hidden treasuries,
You keep your secrets with such firm intent!
And yet for centuries uncountable
You've fought without compassion or regret,
So much do you love violence and death,
Eternal foes, brothers implacable!
